Police and emergency services work changes the nervous system. Repeated exposure to trauma, hypervigilance, shift work, conflict, organisational pressure, and the constant need to stay switched on can build up over time — even when you’re “coping” on the outside.
Blue Healers Counselling offers trauma-informed, practical support for first responders who want a confidential space to debrief, reset, and get back to feeling more like themselves — at work, at home, and in their relationships. Our practice leadership includes a former WA Police Officer with 15 years’ service, so the realities of the job are understood without you needing to translate the culture.
No doctor’s referral is required to make a booking. In-person counselling in Graceville, Brisbane, plus online sessions Australia-wide. QPS Self Refer provider.
First responders carry a load most people never see. You might be dealing with cumulative stress, intrusive memories, anger or irritability, sleep disruption, anxiety, emotional numbness, relationship strain, or a sense that you’re running on adrenaline even on your days off. Sometimes the pressure doesn’t show up as “big trauma” — it’s the slow drip of critical incidents, difficult jobs, repeated exposure, workplace tension, and the expectation to keep performing. Over time, that can lead to burnout, withdrawal, hypervigilance, risk-taking, or feeling disconnected from the people you care about.
At Blue Healers Counselling, the work is practical, paced, and trauma-informed. We focus on helping your nervous system settle, making sense of what your mind and body are doing (and why), and building strategies you can actually use between shifts. That might include grounding and regulation skills, sleep support, managing anger escalation, addressing intrusive thoughts, improving communication at home, working with moral injury themes, and building a steadier “pause” before reactions take over. We also support people who aren’t sure what they’re feeling — they just know they’re not okay, or they’re not functioning like they used to.
Confidentiality matters, especially in uniformed roles. Sessions are private and independent, and we work within a clear ethical framework, including confidentiality and privacy obligations. If you’re using a workplace program or panel arrangement, we can talk through what is and isn’t shared so you feel clear and in control. You don’t have to “prove” anything to access support — you just need a place where you can speak honestly without judgement or stigma.
What to expect: most clients start with 50-minute sessions. You’ll leave with a clearer plan and practical strategies to try between sessions. Support is available for adults, teens, men, first responders, and couples (where relevant). If the job has been getting into your sleep, your mood, your reactions, or your relationships, it’s worth getting support early — before the load becomes your new normal.
